After spending an incredible week exploring the beauty of Oman, it was finally time to head back to India. My return journey was on Oman Air economy class from Muscat to Mumbai, scheduled for an early morning departure at 5 AM.
This flight turned out to be quite interesting—not just because of the onboard experience, but also due to a unique airline policy that can actually save you a hotel night!
Early Check-Out from Sheraton Oman Hotel
Since my flight was at 5 AM, I had to check out of the Sheraton Oman hotel the previous night around 10 PM.
In hindsight, this felt like a wasted booking because I didn’t even use the second night fully. If you’re planning a similar itinerary, this is something you should definitely plan smarter (more on that later 👇).
Oman Air Online Check-in Experience (Game Changer!)
One of the most surprising aspects of flying with Oman Air was their online check-in system.I completed web check-in a day before departure.Online boarding pass was issued instantly. This is quite rare, as many international airlines still require passengers to visit the counter for document verification.
Muscat Airport Experience & Early Immigration Clearance
After reaching Muscat International Airport, I still went to the check-in counter just to confirm.
To my surprise:
- Staff confirmed no document verification needed
- Since I had no check-in baggage, I was allowed to proceed directly to immigration
- This was allowed more than 6 hours before departure
👉 This is a huge advantage compared to the usual 3-hour rule at most airports.
Lounge Access at Primeclass Lounge (Priority Pass Benefit)
After clearing immigration, I headed straight to the Primeclass Lounge, which I accessed using my Priority Pass.
Lounge Highlights:
- Accessed the lounge twice during the long wait
- Comfortable seating and relaxing ambiance
- Good food and beverage options
- Private sleeping room available (huge plus!)
I spent nearly 5 hours here, even taking a short nap in a private room—making the long wait extremely comfortable.
Boarding Experience & Aircraft Condition
Boarding was:
- Smooth and well-organized
- No unnecessary delays
The aircraft cabin was:
- Clean and well-maintained
- Seats were comfortable for a short-haul international flight
Cabin crew were:
- Friendly
- Polite
- Professional throughout the journey
The aircraft was equipped with a modern in-flight entertainment system featuring large personal screens, which added a premium touch to the overall economy class experience on Oman Air. The screen quality was sharp, responsive, and offered a decent selection of movies, TV shows, and music to keep passengers entertained throughout the journey. During web check-in, I opted for an aisle seat, as those were the only complimentary seats available at the time. While I would have preferred a window seat for the views, the aisle seat turned out to be quite convenient, especially for easy movement and quick access during the flight.
In-Flight Meal Experience (Minor Issue)
During meal service, there was a small issue as
limited vegetarian meals were loaded,I received my pre-selected meal, however the passenger behind me did not get a veg option.
The crew handled it politely and offered bread and butter as an alternative.
👉 While not ideal, the situation was managed professionally.
Landing Experience at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport
The landing experience in Mumbai was smooth but slightly delayed as aircraft had to circle multiple times due to air traffic congestion.
Unique Advantage of Flying Oman Air
The biggest takeaway from this journey was:
✈️ Early Immigration Clearance Benefit
Because Oman Air issues online boarding passes, passengers can:
- Skip check-in counters (if no baggage)
- Clear immigration much earlier than usual
👉 This can completely change how you plan your stay near the airport.
Pro Travel Tip (Save Money on Hotel Stay 💰)
If I had known about this earlier:
- I would have booked only 1 night at Sheraton Oman
- Instead of paying for an extra night I didn’t use
- I could have spent the night comfortably in the lounge
