Flying Tashkent to Mumbai on Uzbekistan Airways: What to Expect

After spending an incredible, culture-filled week exploring the ancient silk road cities of Uzbekistan, it was time to head back home. For my return journey, I flew with Uzbekistan Airways from Tashkent International Airport (TAS) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai.

If you are planning a trip to Central Asia and wondering what the national carrier of Uzbekistan is like, here is my honest Uzbekistan Airways economy class review, covering everything from airport lounges to inflight entertainment and a minor immigration hiccup at Mumbai airport.

Navigating Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport (TAS)

As the main international gateway to Uzbekistan and one of the busiest aviation hubs in Central Asia, Islam Karimov Tashkent International Airport (TAS) has undergone massive expansions and layout upgrades. The airport is split into two primary passenger buildings: Terminal 3 handles all domestic routes (perfect for catching a quick flight to Samarkand or Bukhara), while Terminal 2 handles all international arrivals and departures, including my flight back to Mumbai.
The terminal itself is relatively compact and easy to navigate compared to massive global hubs, which means you won’t have to walk miles to get to your gate. Inside, you will find basic duty-free shopping, currency exchange booths, and cafes.
Essential Tips for Departing Tashkent Airport:
The Early Morning Rush: While the check-in counters move efficiently, the infrastructure can bottleneck during peak flight times. Early morning departures are notoriously busy, and since immigration can operate with limited counters (only two were open for my flight), queues build up quickly.
Buffer Time: Do not risk arriving late. For international flights, ensure you are at the airport a full 2 to 2.5 hours before departure to comfortably clear security and passport control.
Connectivity Catch: A quick heads-up for modern travelers—the airport’s public Wi-Fi can be notoriously tricky to log into without a local SIM card. If you plan to call a ride-share like Yandex Go to get to the airport, make sure you arrange it before losing your hotel connection, or ensure your roaming data is active!

Departure from Tashkent Airport (TAS)

My flight from Tashkent to Mumbai was scheduled for an early morning departure at around 8:00 AM. To ensure a stress-free check-in, I arrived at Tashkent International Airport by 6:00 AM.

The check-in process was relatively swift, and I managed to secure my pre-booked window seat. However, the morning rush hour at immigration slowed things down. Only two immigration counters were operational at that hour, which resulted in longer queues. If you are flying out of Tashkent on a morning flight, I highly recommend arriving a full 2 to 2.5 hours before departure just in case.

Reviewing the Anjir Business Lounge (Tashkent Airport)

Because I was flying Economy Class, lounge access wasn't included with my ticket. Luckily, my Amex Platinum Charge Card includes a complimentary Priority Pass, which gave me free access to the Anjir Business Lounge at Tashkent Airport.

Travel Tip: Always check your credit card perks before traveling! The Anjir Business Lounge is an excellent place to escape the terminal crowds, grab a warm cup of coffee, and enjoy a quick breakfast before a morning flight.

After spending a relaxing hour fueling up in the lounge, I made my way to the boarding gate.

Inflight Experience: Tashkent to Mumbai on Uzbekistan Airways

Interestingly, the aircraft operating my return leg was the exact same plane I had flown on my inbound journey from Mumbai to Tashkent.

1. Seating and Aerial Views

I settled into my window seat, and we pushed back right on time. Shortly after takeoff, the true perk of having a window seat on this route became clear. The flight path offers absolutely stunning, panoramic views of snow-covered mountain ranges. Seeing the rugged, icy peaks from 35,000 feet was easily one of the major highlights of the flight.

2. Food and Cabin Crew

Uzbekistan Airways serves a hot meal on the Tashkent to Mumbai route. The food was fresh, flavorful, and quite tasty—definitely a step up from standard economy airline meals. The cabin crew members were friendly, polite, and attentive throughout the journey, ensuring everyone was comfortable.

3. Inflight Entertainment (IFE)

The aircraft featured a functional seatback infotainment system. While the media library might not be as massive as some Middle Eastern carriers, it had a decent selection. I easily passed the time watching a movie, and the screen quality was good.

Arrival in Mumbai and the "Boarding Pass" Hiccup

We had a smooth touchdown at Mumbai airport. However, I ran into a minor issue at Mumbai terminal's immigration.

Typically, international arrivals can utilize the fast-track automated immigration scanners to skip the lines. Unfortunately, during the boarding process back in Tashkent, the gate agent tore my boarding pass incorrectly. They kept the larger portion and handed me the smaller stub.

Because the vital barcode was on the part they kept, the fast-track immigration scanners in Mumbai couldn't read my boarding pass stub. As a result, I had to join the regular manual queues for immigration. While it added a bit of waiting time to the end of my trip, it didn't ruin what was otherwise a great journey.

The Verdict: Is Uzbekistan Airways Good?

Overall, my experience flying Uzbekistan Airways from Tashkent to Mumbai was highly comfortable, punctual, and pleasant. From the delicious meals to the breathtaking mountain views, it is an excellent and convenient choice for anyone traveling between India and Uzbekistan.
